Better be Good to Me When I'm Going the Distance
A few months ago I was really bored for some entertainment so I rented a vapid little flick called “Going the Distance
”, one of this silly National Lampoon films, co-produced by Much Music.
I really didn’t expect much beyond a few cheap laughs based on all today’s easiest gag material (like sex and mary jane) and in the end that’s pretty much all I got.
One thing that did catch my attention was a musical interlude where one of the main characters, Sasha, played by Newfoundland native Joanne Kelly did a really rockin’ cover of Tina Turner“’s Better Be Good to Me”.
Now, I have a pretty big soft spot for Newfie ladies, so I was really curious to find out if Ms. Kelly had actually done her own singing for this scene (which I’m very sure she did not) and if not, who’s voice was it?
Well, I never did come up with an answer for my question, but (in typical form) I did find out about another very interesting musician: Holly Knight, co-writer of “Better Be Good to Me”.
Holly Knight is seems is actually a pretty famous classically-trained singer/songwriter, having penned dozens of well known tunes.
The thing that really stuck me though, was that Holly Knight had writren about a dozen of my favorite songs, including, but not limited to:
Love is a Battlefield - Pat Benatar
Invincible - Pat Benatar
Ragdoll - Aerosmith
Love Touch – Rod Stewart
The Warrior – Patty Smyth
Obsession – Animotion
I Pledge Allegiance To The State Of Rock and Roll - KISS
and the Theme for the TV Show "Angel".
As another odd coincidence, I share the same birth date with both Pat Benatar and Rod Stewert.
Go figure!

OMG!!! I never mentioned to ANYONE that I'd seen (and really enjoyed) the movie "Going the Distance"! Refreshing to read that someone else noted the music! I also wondered (and researched) whether or not Joanne Kelly used her real voice for the song. So, you think she didn't? Thanks for the very cool and informative post! Neat that Holly Knight wrote the lyrics to some of my fave classics!
PS. On a totally off topic, would you happen to be a Salvador Dali fan? :) Seems you were the only one who noted the title in my post!
Holy Cow! You're right! We may be the only 2 people in the entire country to have ever seen "Going the Distance"! It's hard to resist a good roadtripping picture (especially ones with a really cute newfies) and like any technogeek, it was a thrill to see Matt (Max Headroom) Frewer's brief appearance as the crazy father.
I looked everywhere I could think of to figure out who sung "Better Be Good to Me". On the Internet Movie Database soundtrack listing it has full credits for every single song, except that one! And, it's not on the official soundtrack, which makes it a pretty big mystery.
In fact, I had to rip the audio track from the rented DVD in order to make an MP3 for myself to listen to.
Even Rotten Tomatoes is void of information, except 5 splat reviews, which means that it rated a whole 0% on the tomatometer! (LOL)
Oh yes, if you couldn't tell from my strange digital art, I am a complete and utter fan of surreal art (and humour). I love Salvador Dali, René Magritte, M.C. Escher, even the really early medieval surrealists like Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder!
Thank goodness! Someone else on the Island who shares similar interests!!!
BTW, the Medieval period is one of my faves with regard to art and architecture. I know it wasn't the greatest period to live in, with life being so harsh, but there's something very appealing in reading about its history. Have you ever read Ken Follett's "Pillars of the Earth"? It's a great read!
Oh yes! The medieval period certainly produced some excellent creativity! I used to spend a lot of time with a friend who had a degree in medieval French and medieval architecture, so if I thought really hard, I could probably still remember the difference between machicolations and crenulations and maybe even my transept from my narthex.
Aye! It is very odd to find anyone on the island that isn't interested in the normal "Island stuff"! I have often thought that the island could use an SCA chapter, but I don't know where I'd ever find a whole 6 people interested in medieval recreation!
I haven't read "Pillars of the Earth", but the reviews sound pretty cool, so I'll have to add it to my reading list, thank you for the recommendation!
If you want, I could lend you my copy of Pillars of the Earth...if you don't want to buy a copy. Then again, Amazon has some pretty good deals and if you buy the book second hand, it costs almost nothing :) I'm cheap...I buy second hand. There's something romantic about reading a book that someone else has read. It's neat to think of the history the book has had and the hands its passed through. I love the dog-eared, scribbled and scrawled stuff in the margins! LOL
Hi, I'm trying to find that song by Ms. Kelly in "Going the Distance" as well. Would you mind sending it to me? I don't know how to do the DVD rip thing.
Thanks in advance!!
I know I'm REALLY late to this party. I bought the movie, Going the Distance, because of Joanne Kelly. I honestly do believe it is HER singing the song. I've seen her CV and it lists that she's soprano. It's a shame the music credits do not list who performed the song (it's listed in the music credits, but not who sang) so that makes me think it was Joanne.
That's ok! I think you may be right! D
